Crested Butte Part 1

Crested Butte is easily our favorite mountain town in Colorado. It’s small, walkable, and genuinely dog-friendly — the kind of place where being outside feels built into the day.
We stayed near the base of the mountain, which made it easy to keep a steady rhythm. Mornings started with long walks through town and along the Slate River on the Lower Loop Trail. Simple miles, fresh air, dogs setting the pace.
We spent time paddle boarding at Meridian Lake, which takes a bit of effort to get to — either a steep half-mile hike or a longer, more gradual route. When we arrived, we had the lake to ourselves. Quiet water, cool air, dogs hanging nearby. No reason to rush.
One day we signed up for a guided 4x4 trip and headed up American Flag Mountain. We were told we’d only have time for one trail, but we moved fast and ended up finishing both before the other groups were even back. The terrain was technical, the views were wide open, and it ended up being one of the more memorable parts of the trip.
Between bigger outings, we slowed things down. More walks around town. A longer hike out to West Maroon Trails. A stop at Emerald Lake on the way back. Each day had enough movement to feel full without feeling overpacked.
Crested Butte has a way of making everything feel balanced. Adventure when you want it, quiet when you need it — and plenty of space for dogs to be dogs.
